I help charities/ third sector organisations build confident, compassionate managers so that they can reduce staff turnover, improve performance, and create thriving teams.
About:
I help charities and third sector organisations build confident, compassionate managers who know how to get the best out of people. When managers feel equipped and supported, teams stay motivated, staff stick around, and organisations can focus on their mission instead of firefighting people problems.
Over the years I’ve seen the same challenge come up again and again: people are promoted into management roles because they’ve been around a long time, know the organisation inside out, or have real technical expertise. But managing people is very different to being technically brilliant. Without the right support, even the most dedicated managers can feel out of their depth – and that takes a toll on them, their teams, and ultimately the organisation.
The organisations I work with usually tell me similar stories. They have managers who are deeply passionate about the cause but lack the confidence to lead people. Management styles vary from team to team, which leaves staff unsure of what’s expected and disengaged as a result. People don’t always feel safe to speak up, so ideas get lost and innovation stalls. And too often, great employees leave – not because they don’t care about the mission, but because of the way they’re managed.
None of this is “soft stuff.” It has a direct impact on performance and sustainability. High staff turnover is expensive. Low engagement drains energy and productivity. A lack of psychological safety means organisations miss out on fresh ideas, struggle to adapt, and find it harder to deliver change.
That’s where I come in. My work is about creating leadership cultures that are compassionate and psychologically safe, but also clear and accountable. When managers feel confident in their role, they:
- Retain and motivate staff, cutting recruitment costs and disruption.
- Build connected, high-performing teams that deliver results.
- Lead change with clarity, keeping people on board and focused.
- Create consistency, so staff know what to expect and feel supported.
The benefits ripple outwards. Organisations see higher engagement, stronger trust across teams, and better progress towards strategic goals. And instead of constantly battling with people issues, they build workplaces where staff want to stay and give their best.
My background combines both academic expertise and years of hands-on experience in the sector. I hold an MSc in Psychology, specialising in psychological safety, and I design and deliver ILM-accredited leadership programmes that give managers recognised qualifications as well as practical skills. Over 15 years of working with charities and not-for-profits, I’ve supported managers at every stage of their journey — from brand-new line managers through to senior leaders wanting to develop a consistent culture across their organisation.
Clients often describe me as approachable, insightful, and able to “say the hard things with kindness.” I believe clarity builds confidence, and growth happens when we name what’s not working. That’s why my approach balances compassion with accountability: it makes people feel supported, but it also gets results.
One charity leader recently described the impact of our work like this:
After a long search to find our perfect leadership development partner, we discovered Hayley through a mutual connection at WISH (Women in Social Housing). Hayley worked in partnership with our OD team to develop a tailored learning programme to support leaders in developing psychological safety within and across teams, while exploring the leadership skills required to cultivate high performance. Hayley’s facilitation skills are genuinely “next level”. The way she helped the team to transform leadership theory into important personal insight, and reflections into action was truly remarkable. Hayley’s knowledge and expertise really shines through, and I would highly recommend her to any organisation looking to support leaders at all levels. – Anna Boag, HR&OD Manager, Caledonia Housing Association
